Laura Burns

EY - Audit Associate, Energy Sector

I am currently working within Audit and training for my Chartered Accountancy with ICAEW but would like the opportunity to use my skills within the charity sector. I have developed a wide range of skills from technical accounting and financial reporting to the ability to analytically analyse business internal and external environments. Further to this a competent working with excel. Prior to joining EY I studied Economics with a focus on development economics. This study included a dissertation project that modelled the effect of gender inequality within health and education on economic growth. I found this involvement within the development field hugely interesting and would like to use my skills to help with a charity project within health, development or inequality. I have previously worked for a multinational charity, the order of St John, where I gain a huge insight into the differences between charity work and the private sector. This I feel will help me appreciate the challenges that charities face. Finally, travelling is a huge passion for me. I spent 6 months travelling around India, south east Asia as well as USA and Australia. This trip showed me first hand the huge inequality in the world and the enormous potential developing nations have. Such experiences have added to my desire to participate within the development work that is carried out around the world as well as issues we face within the UK with refugees, domestic violence, health and education.

Refugee Support Network

Crisis to classroom - helping young refugees and asylum seekers progress in education

We support a large number of young asylum seekers and refugees to access, progress and thrive in education. Many of these young people are in the UK with out their families and are looked after by the local authority. One of our core programmes is to recruit volunteer mentors to support young refugees with homework. We ask all volunteers to submit a comprehensive application form, supply references and complete a DBS check. As such we are dealing with a lot of confidential information and we would love a team to help us do a data protection audit and come up with an action plan to ensure our systems and procedures are best practice. In addition we know that our use of IT is inefficient and our levels of access are not well thought through so we would also hugely value a team who could help us propose a structure for online filing and provide training in this.
