Speakers Trust trains young people to speak and be heard. This year we will build vital communication skills for work and life in over 40,000 14-17 year olds. In addition, we reach several hundred clients each year through our trading work. We want to maximise the value of relationships with the people we train and their networks to grow profile, support and income, ultimately enabling us to help more young people. Developing robust data systems will be crucial to making this happen.

The General Data Protection Regulation comes into force in May 2018 replacing the Data Protection Act and governing the processing of personal data. We will combine this opportunity with the enhanced capacity of a BeyondMe team to create a transformative project that will enable us to develop the hundreds of relationships we initiate each year with service users, the people who look after them, high-profile professionals who volunteer their time to judge our competitions and clients who pay for our training. A successful BeyondMe project would deliver robust strategies to reach these groups, deeper relationships with potential funders and ongoing contact with young people who have used our services.

Historically our programmes have been funded through long-standing partnerships with grant-making trusts, as well as through trading income generated by selling our training to voluntary sector and corporate clients. Two years ago, we identified a risk of overdependence on these established sources of income. Since then we have enhanced our sustainability by increasing trading revenue and winning new grants. This year we will launch our first programme to encourage donations from individuals and we are beginning to scope a corporate partnership offer. These new income streams rely on maximising the value of existing relationships.

This project we will ensure that we have suitable data policies and processes in place and develop data systems and strategies in line with our safeguarding policies that enable us to maintain contact and build relationships with the organisations, businesses and individuals with whom we work.
